Listen. Learn. Engage.

Listen. Learn. Engage. (LLE) is a program which guides students in multiple ways.  First, students develop the motivation to move through division.  Then students gain skills to increase group understanding.  Finally, students confidently connect civic engagement and civil discourse within their community.

Through participation, Shepherd students from all programs of study gain the skills needed for effective political and civic engagement. Therefore, they help create a more civil, open-minded, and civically-engaged society.

The Stubblefield Institute Community Leadership & Civil Advocacy Certificate

The Stubblefield Institute Community Leadership & Civil Advocacy Certificate prepares students to step into community leadership roles and to effectively advocate for themselves, their families and the causes that they care about. In order to provide students with an experience of excellence, Shepherd University and the Stubblefield Institute have partnered to offer this certificate program.

Why participate?

Through action-oriented educational opportunities, Shepherd University students prepare to be leaders after graduation.  Therefore, participating students follow the Stubblefield Institute’s Community Leadership & Civil Advocacy certificate guided program.

Students complete certificate requirements by engaging with Shepherd University activities on campus and in the local community.  Through this highly interactive process, students practice effective communication skills, network with other student and community leaders, and develop critical thinking through each focus area of the certificate program:

Introduction to Leadership & Advocacy:

Participants will learn about the legislative policy process, and connect with projects and professionals according to their areas of interest. Particularly, students develop an understanding of how leadership works.  They also explore their personal strengths and political identities.

Creating a Culture of Respect:

With guidance, students will work with and lead purpose-driven teams.  While doing so, they will learn to build trust, navigate conflict with confidence, and practice civil discourse across differences. 

Community Engagement:

Graduates will succeed when they have a broad understanding of their world.  Therefore, certificate program participants are encouraged to diversify their relationships and expand their knowledge as they engage in community service with intention. Accordingly, students will interact with student groups outside their usual interest areas, university departments beyond their majors, and local or state government agencies.
